FARM SCHOOL: Planting peas!

Teacher Ellen
We went to farm school again yesterday. It was a beautiful, warm, sunny day.

Farm Teacher Heidi helped us understand the difference between hard, compacted soil, and soft, fluffy soil. We reviewed the farm rules:
Stay on the path, don't step on the plants.
Ask before you touch.
Have fun!
We have one more farm rule: Farm Freeze, a safety rule, but we did not need to use it yesterday.

These are the pea seeds that we grew at preschool. We placed them under a grow light. We were so proud of them!

But look at the difference! Our seeds from school are on the left, and the ones that grew in the greenhouse on the farm are on the right. We noticed the differences: ours were taller and had smaller leaves, and the greenhouse plants were shorter and had fatter leaves. We decided it was something to do with how much light, and what kind of light the plants got.

Farm Teacher Heidi taught us how to plant the plants.

We know these baby plants are going to need to be treated gently.

First we loosened up the soil.

We had a long row to work on. We worked with a partner and a parent or teacher.

We measured how far apart the plants needed to be,

and then we gently planted the baby plants.

Afterwards, we watered our plants.

The watering cans were heavy, and we needed to work together to get the peas watered.

Look what we did!

After planting we took a tour of the farm to see what Farmer Brian has growing in his greenhouses. We tasted arugula, and fresh spinach. Yum! Everything tastes better on the farm!
