The Scents of the Season

Teacher Ellen
Smells have the power to bring up vivid memories. Since it is our job as parents and early childhood educators to be making memories for our children, using all five senses is very important.

This December we made pot pourri using fir and cedar greens. We snipped these greens as small as we could.

We also used a hammer to break cinnamon sticks into little tiny pieces to add.

Another wonderful scent from the season is the smell of orange peels. Since we eat a lot of satsumas for snack, we had a good supply of peelings to also cut into small pieces.

We grated fresh nutmeg, and we ground whole cloves in a mortar and pestle and added these warm spices to our mix.

We filled tiny bags with these wonderful scents and gave them as gifts to our loved ones. Mmmm!
