St Lucia Day

Teacher Ellen
During the dark time of winter and near the winter solstice, the Orca class learns about how different people celebrate the light. We learned about St Lucia, who helped people being treated mean in ancient Rome. These people were hiding in tunnels deep under the city, where it was very dark. They were very hungry. St Lucia baked them bread, and because it was so dark in the tunnels, and her hands were full of the bread, she made a wreath of candles to light her way.

We made our own St Lucia crowns.

We made special St Lucia buns from bread dough.

In Scandinavian countries, where this day is celebrated, they clean the house in preparation. We worked hard, washing, and sweeping to prepare.

The oldest sister carries the Lucia buns, so we chose our oldest girl to lead our parade. The rest of us carried our star wands and followed in a procession.

We put a sweet glaze on our Lucia buns, and ate them with hot cocoa. It was a fun day!
