The Orca's Last Nature Day

Teacher Ellen
On the Orca's last Nature Day for the school year, we hiked down Fairy Dell Trail to the beach. Each beach we have visited this year is unique in it's own way. This afternoon the tide was on it's way in. We drew a line in the sand and predicted how long it would take for the water to reach the line.

We hunted for sea life. We found a lot of long sea worms under the rocks. An eagle sat nearby and watched us.

This beach is at the base of a sand stone bluff, and a series of rocks have tumbled down onto the beach. The children were fascinated by climbing on the rocks. These provided a totally different experience of climbing and risk taking than other places we have been.

The children discovered that the sand stone would break if you pounded on it with a stick or another rock. It also got slimy and slippery if you dipped it in the sea water. The children worked both individually and in teams to try to move rocks so they could break them.

Afterwards, we sat an the rock steps and shared our snack.

The trail is aptly names "Fairy Dell" because you can just imagine fairies and little people would live there.

At the top of the trail is Battle Point Park. We played on the grass and in the trees and rolled down the hill. Look at those cool clouds!

We watched the ducks and geese in the pond. The red winged black birds came very close to us and sat in the trees, singing. "Oh-ka-lee! Oh-ka-lee!"
