Emergent Literacy in Preschool

Teacher Ellen
It is always fascinating how literacy activities just present themselves throughout a typical day. Here a young three year old is "working on the computer" (an old keyboard that is not connected to anything). He wanted to write me an email, but didn't know how to write my name, so I gave it to him on a sticky note. His focus on the task was intense.

Another time the children used phone books, old cell phones, and clip boards and busily looked up phone numbers, wrote notes, and made lists.

Even making a picture with a flannel board is an opportunity to write down the story as it develops.
