Winter fun
During the darkest time of the year we learn about how different people bring light into their lives. In Scandinavian countries they celebrate St Lucia Day. St Lucia wore a crown of candles, so we make our own candle crowns.
The oldest girl in the class carries the Lucia buns in the procession.
We each made our own Lucia bun.
They have a special shape, and are decorated with raising. We add a sweet glaze before we eat them.
We learned about Hanukkah by building the temple using all of our blocks and working together. We placed a light in the temple to represent the lamp, and told of how the temple was knocked down to stop the people from singing their songs, telling their stories, living their own lives. We talk about how it's not good to tell other people they can't do this.
The Orca class loves gingerbread house day. They set their own limit on how many pieces of candy they can eat (and usually they start with only one, and together decide what is reasonable). Then they do a pretty good job of self-policing this.
It takes some work to get the graham crackers to stick, and then to add the "snow" and goodies.
Aren't they wonderful?
This class really liked playing what they call "The Santa Game." Here is Santa driving the sleigh with three reindeer.
These children are sleeping, waiting for Santa to come and visit them.
