Spring at Farm School

Teacher Ellen
Spring is here, and it's time to wake up the farm and start the planting! To prepare for planting peas at the farm we explored peas: sugar snap peas, pea shoots, and sweet English peas.

It was exciting to find the peas inside the pea pod.

Look how many we found! Cooked with a little butter and salt- delicious!

The weather was amazing when we went to the farm for farm school. Farm Teacher Heidi helped us play a game and helped us know what we were going to do on the farm.

We visited Farmer Betsey's horses. Her horses are different than the horses we saw at Bountiful Farm. Because her horses are work horses, their feet and legs are much bigger and stronger.

We had a farm scavenger hunt sheet while we walked the farm. Could we find something red? A tractor? A dandelion? Garlic growing in the field?

We worked with a partner to complete the sheet.

We met a farm intern working in the field.

She sowed us the peas growing on their trellis.

They have little 'pea hands' (tendrils) to hold onto the string.

Look how big these peas have become!

One of our favorite things was the field of tall grass and wild flowers!

In the greenhouse we reviewed how a seed grows.

Then we worked with our partner to plant pea seeds.

It was hard work to fill the planting trays and then get only one seed in each of the 72 holes. We left four trays in the greenhouse and brought one back to school so we can watch it grow.
