The Orca Olympics

Teacher Ellen

The orcas are busily preparing for the Orca Olympics. We learned some about the Olympics, and discussed why we could ot do our own winter Olympics (no snow and ice). Instead we chose to do some summer events. We formed four committees to get the work done. Here the Sign Committee (a committee of one) prepares some colors for the class to vote on for the color scheme for our Olympics.

We also voted for a symbol. Would it be a star, a heart, or a stripe? The heart won!

The building committee worked on the plans for the awards platform. One little boy suggested we make it out of foil. We had to test the foil to see if it would support our weight, which it didn't, so we searched through our wood pile for some pieces that might work. We tested them out to decide how to build thme so they would be string enough.

There are two coaches on the coaching committee. They learned what a coach does from a mom who is a coach. They came up with our daily warm up. We know that it is important to wake up our hearts, lungs, and muscles each day, especially before we practice for the Olympics.

The coaches have been leading the practice of gymnastics inside, as well as our outside events each day.

The building committee determined what tools they would need to build the platform.

They worked hard to build it strong enough.

The sign committee worked hard to make the event signs. These will be placed on stakes and put outside to mark where the different events will take place.

This committee also used the copy machine to make the parts of the invitations.

We voted for our mascot, the Orca whale, of course, and we made a big banner for the Olypmics.

The building committee has the team vote for the colors for the platform. Should it be yellow with purple hearts, or purple with yellow hearts? Once it had been decided, they painted the platform.

The reception committee has been hard at work deciding on the food to be served at our celebration reception when the Olympics are over. We voted for our healthy food, and ice cream for our sweet. We also decided to make cookies to go with our ice cream.

We cut them in the shape of hearts, our symbol. We decided to frost some of them purple, and some of them yellow. We will hold our Olympics this week. We can hardly wait!
