The Raptors Visit the Preschool

Teacher Ellen
Last week West Sound Wildlife Shelter visited school, bringing two of their animal ambassadors. We had expected a saw whet owl and a turkey vulture, but neither bird was in good physical shape to come. Instead we had an American Kestrel and a Barred Owl visit.

The children had been eagerly waiting to see an owl. They found the small kestrel interesting, but they were quite impressed with the large owl.

We learned that an owl cannot turn it's head all the way around, but it can sure turn it far to both sides!

A lot of children and families came to the event. They listened carefully as the ladies introduced the birds, and asked lots of questions.

Then we made bird feeders. 60 feeders were made that day! Most of them were taken into the Wildlife Sanctuary at school. After snack, many kids played happily on the rain on the playground, while their parents watched from a nearby covered area. The next day we checked the Sanctuary, and all of the feeders were gone? Who took them, leaving just the string?
