The food bank and the grocery store
We are learning about food at school. As part of our work to become an Eco-School we are learning about sustainable food. We are exploring where our food comes from, and how far it has to travel to get to us. We collected cereal for the food bank, as well as warm winter clothing. We collected over 25 boxes of cereal, and 13 bags of clothing!
We took the cereal and clothing to Helpline House. They were so happy to see us, and thankful for what we had brought. We got a tour of the food bank. It was interesting to see how little food there was on the shelves.
After the food bank, we went to the local grocery store, T&C, to learn more about where our food comes from. Steve met us and took us on a wonderful tour of the store.
In the fish department we learned a lot about salmon. This is a King salmon, and there are 5 kinds of salmon: chum, sockeye, king, silver, and pink. We also got to learn a lot about crab and touch a large dungeness crab.
We went into the giant freezer full of ice cream (yum, and brrr!). We also went into the giant refrigerator. You can open up a door and see through the food to the customers shopping out there! It was funny!
We all got a yummy cookie. We talked about how there is so much more food in the grocery store than in the food bank. Maybe we can bring them more food so that the families who shop there can have more things to eat. After our cookies we went on a food hunt in the produce department, trying to find food from Washington and the Northwest, food from other states, and food from other countries. We found food from Mexico, and Canada, Guatemala and even Australia!
