Farm work continues... POTATO HARVEST!

Teacher Ellen
Our farm work with the Educulture Project continues this fall. Last week we harvested 100' of potatoes. We grew mainly Ozette fingerlings, a potato that originally came from Peru by way of Spanish explorers to the Makah indians at Neah Bay in the late 1700's.

Digging for potatoes is like digging for gold, and is a perfect job for young children. We used our hands so we would not damage the potatoes. The potatoes cam in all sizes and shapes, and we were surprised to even see some purple potatoes and German butterball potatoes in with the Ozettes.

We spent several days washing the potatoes, and sorting them by size and shape. Some of them had very funny shapes. One was shaped like a heart!

The Orca class cut and fried the potatoes, and they were so yummy!

The preschool families have all taken some potatoes home, and we have a large bag to take to our local foodbank at Helpline House.

Next week we harvest sugar pumpkins!
