Playing Wildlife Shelter
Another example of emergent curriculum came in a round about fashion in the Orca class. From silly play of cooking the dolls, and cutting them with knives and forks, to thinking about what doctors do when they perform surgery, to finally playing that the stuffed animals were hurt, and then outside when a mom, who was an injured bat, was rescued and helped- this is how we began to explore the idea of the wildlife shelter.
We are lucky to have a great wildlife shelter on the Island, and several of us have visited it before. We built cages and beds for the animals. We brought them food and water.
The injured animals were scared and had to be gently coaxed to come to the wildlife shelter.
They were checked out by the workers at the shelter.
Often they had a broken wing or leg from being hit by a car. They were x-rayed, bandaged, and kept comfortable in the shelter before being released.
