The Orca's first day at Farm School

Teacher Ellen
Last week we had our first day at Farm School with the Educulture Project at Morales Farm. We have learned to chant the farm rules:
Stay on the path, don't step on the plants.
Ask before you touch.
Farm Freeze (a safety rule)!
Have fun!
Teacher's name is Heidi. She talked to us about the treasure we were going to dig: potatoes!

We walked out into the farm field.

Where is the path? It's sometimes hard to tell on the farm.

Farm Teacher Heidi showed us where the potatoes were buried. First we had to pull away the weeds.

We used our hands to dig in the soil. Getting our hands in the dirt makes us smarter and helps to grow our green thumbs. We filled our buckets with potatoes. Then we washed the mud off. When we were in the field we heard thunder. It was loud! It was raining while we washed the potatoes, and we got almost as wet as the potatoes did. Each of us chose a small potato to cook on the camp stove in the greenhouse while it rained.

Finally the rain stopped and we headed back outside. Some of us picked 5 sugar pumpkins from the pumpkin vines.

The rest of us went to visit the chickens.

We checked the nesting boxes for eggs. Don;t take the eggs with the faces on them! They're the fake eggs used to teach the chickens not to peck the eggs. We got 4 pretty eggs.

It was time to eat our potatoes. They were served on little sticks.

The cooked potatoes were yummy! Straight from the ground!

Thanks, Farm Teacher Heidi! We love coming to the farm!
